I would like to talk about a recent development on the net. That is a game called Starcitizen. It was crowd funded on kickstarter when kickstarter was a fairly new service:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cig/star-citizen and raised over 2 million dollars. This may seem like alot of cash but its small for serious game development. However the creator Chris Roberts really drummed up alot of attention and last check the balance stood at 59 million. That's all donations, no publisher deals what so ever.
So i guess your wondering, what is Starcitizen? For any of you who may remember in the early 90's a game was made called wing commander, this game was revolutionary at the time and a young Chris Roberts pioneered it. It was one of the many early flight simulators based in space. As with games such as X-Wing and Tie-Fighter it gained allot of attention and in many ways helped to push technology forward so that modern systems of the day could play it with full detail and sound.

Starcitizen much like wing commander is going to revolutionize the entire gaming industry, particularly with support for the occulus rift virtual reality headset amongst other things. Not only has this amazing jump in technology brought a somewhat dead genre back and popularized it into mainstream also beating all world records for the most crowd funding ever in a single game, it features one of the highest polygon count in a game ever made http://wccftech.com/ryse-polygon-count-comparision-aaa-titles-crysis-star-citizen/

Sadly Starcitizen hasn't worked out very well. Its no longer the dream they sold through kickstarter to many. A darn pity. It will probably get released some day but the company has gone after $'s much to the disappointment of many early backers.
